The Sacrifice of the Silver Thimble

The Sacrifice of the Silver Thimble

by Michele Habel-Coffey

The silver thimble

Covering the tender flesh

Pushing on the needle

That binds the tearing seams

A tapestry

Of quilted memories

Squares of color

Moments

Bound together

Disjointedly

Painfully

I give the thimble

All that remains

Sacrificed for war

For the greater good

Leaving the tender digit

Exposed

To the pressure

And the pain

Of the needle

The instrument

That binds

As it wounds

I bleed

My work is not yet done
